Spring Update for the Class of 1972

Dear Classmates:

The holidays are over and while I am writing this winter is still raging especially on the West Coast. I hope you have had a wonderful holiday season.    In New York there has been minimal snow fall but you never know what will happen in March.  Spring and warmer weather is approaching.

We had a great 50th reunion in June and hope to continue the celebration with opportunities to get together in person and on-line.  Reunion was with followed up by an event in September in the DC area at  Mt Vernon and the African American Museum of History and Culture on the National Mall.  We have joined other classes in their Zoom talks and had a follow up Climate change talk on February 2.  The annual Cornell Alumni Leadership Conference was held in San Diego February 17-19 and 10 classmates attended including some California classmates.

Our 50th reunion class yearbook has been a major success and we have decided to extend the ability to add pages, pictures, and updates for the next year before it closes in January of 2024.  So far 543 classmates have started pages.  Please make sure that Cornell has your updated contact information and encourage those you know who have not been in contact recently to update their information so invitations such as the link to join our class yearbook can be sent.  If you have not already joined, please start a page in our 50th Reunion virtual yearbook.  You can let classmates know where you are and what you are up to as well as look for old friends.  There are picture albums in the yearbook with memories of our years at Cornell as well as alumni events.   I have continued to add pictures from reunion and other class events during the past year as well and I encourage you to add pictures and memories as well.  There is no cost to join but you need to join to look at the book.

Please continue to send information as well to our class correspondents Alex Barna, Wes Schulz, Frank Dawson and Sue Straus. The column is part of the new online Cornellian magazine.   You can access the column here.   A hard copy synopsis will soon be offered at a cost to anyone who wants to order it.

Another way to meet classmates and other Cornellians continues to be the Zoom Global Mixer run by Tony Chen ’12 every other Saturday night where we have a 1972 breakout room.  I will continue to send out intermittent reminders however I encourage you to use this opportunity to arrange your own online get togethers.

I also encourage you to pay your class dues.  Class dues allow us to continue to fund events and communications.  They also allow us to subsidize meeting registration fees( We paid all the fees for any classmate who wanted to attend CALC this year).  Dues also provided a significant subsidy for the costs of our past reunions, and we plan on a larger contribution to upcoming reunions to hold the costs to an affordable level.

In addition, you can contribute to our class scholarship and academic innovation awards when you pay your class dues.  An integral part of reunion has been selecting the winners of our innovation awards and getting to know these amazing professors.  They have become part of our reunion family and in addition to giving a lecture at the time of the award, many of them continue to attend our reunions afterwards.  It has been amazing to get to know them and learn from them.

As I have written to you recently, I think the greatest legacy our class we can leave to Cornell is our encouraging and support for the next generations both by setting an example and  by making it possible for them to reap the benefits of attending Cornell.  Our class scholarship funds were redirected this year to support first generation students; a priority of our 50th Reunion year and we received the most amazing thank you letters from our current scholarship recipients. They all made it clear how much difference it made to them.  I am very proud of our class and hope we can continue to provide support for such amazing and deserving students.  Please remember our scholarship funds when you pay your dues.   The Class of 2021 has also asked for our help with their transition into effective alumni and we hope to partner with them on upcoming events and informational sessions.

The next class event, in conjunction with the Class of 1973 and other classes of the 70s,  will  be a webinar program on May 2, 2023 on the war in Ukraine organized by our past president Louise Shelley and other classmates who are experts in the field.  This will cap off our reunion year  celebration but I hope we will continue to see each other and  make new memories and connections. I will be attending reunion again this year as it is my husband’s 50th reunion.  At the Class of 73 reunion in 2018 we had a mini Risley reunion.  Anyone who wants to get together again this June in Ithaca please let me know.

I hope to see CU you soon either at a live Cornell event or on Zoom.

All the best,

Nancy

We had our first webinar of the year on February 2, 2023.  I am pleased to share a recording of A conversation about climate change: Part II - How communities can plan for Climate Change featuring Rebecca Morgenstern Brenner, Senior Lecturer, Brooks School of Public Policy and Dr. Danielle Eiseman, Lecturer, Brooks School of Public Policy. Whether you attended live and want to watch again or registered and couldn’t attend we hope you’ll enjoy the recording! Additional resources have been curated to further the conversation.

 Reunion Check-In Raffle

We had a successful raffle at reunion and raised 1000 dollars for our class scholarship fund which is now designated for first generation students.  The winner of the raffle was Susan Thau Rosenberg.   The prize pictured above is a  27.5” x 21” signed Cornell print by the artist Robert Childress who was best know for illustrations of the Dick and Jane books but also painted pictures of college campuses.  The print was donated by our classmate Joyce Leslie. Thanks so much to Joyce and all those who participated in the raffle.

Details about our reunion will be posted soon.  You can see pictures from reunion on our Class virtual yearbook. Remember to join and update your page by the end of 2022 when the book will be finalized.

Reunion Highlights: Come Early and Come to Party!

Dear Classmates:

Reunion is only a few weeks way and I hope you are planning on attending.  It has been too long since we were able to see each other in person.  It should be a terrific weekend and celebration.

Come Early and Come to Party !

Reunion Highlights Updates:

Wednesday June 9th.   If you will be in town Wednesday, can arrange housing outside of the dorm (which will not be available until Thursday) and are interested in a ½ day program of either golf or a nature hike followed by dinner at Ithaca Beer, or a winery let me know.  Golf time has been arranged for those interested on Wednesday afternoon for 45 dollars.  This can be arranged likely at a low cost.

Friday June 10th.

Our Academic Innovation in Teaching Award winners will tell us about their fields and show their unique way of teaching on Friday Morning 10 AM in the Rhodes-Rawling Auditorium in Klarman Hall.   This year in honor of our 50th reunion 2 award winners were chosen: Dr. Huiju Park from the Department of Fiber Science and Apparel of the College of Human Ecology and Dr. David Albonesi from the Department of Electrical Engineering of the College of Engineering.   They are remarkable educators and very excited about their awards.

At 11:30 AM on Friday Dr. Verity Platt, Chair of the Classics Department will lead a tour and discuss the history of the plaster casts that we used to see in the Temple of Zeus which have been resurrected in Klarman Hall.  She is interested in our memories of the casts and how they were used by students while we were there as well.  She will meet us outside of the Rhodes-Rawling Auditorium in Klarman Hall following the Academic Innovation talks.

There will be the annual Memorial Service at 1:30 PM in the Anabel Taylor Chapell.  As the 50th reunion class we will be helping remember our missing classmates and others.

Since this is such a special year for us – many of the Class of 1972 are or will turn 72 this year (50th reunion ’22) we are going to celebrate with a birthday dance party Friday night in Bethe House with the DJ Elephant Sound.   This is scheduled for 9:30 PM following our dinner on the Ag Quad and the Centennial Chorus Concert.

Saturday June 11th.

The featured speaker on Saturday morning in Schoellkopf is Bill Nye.

The Olin Lecture will be at 3 PM on Saturday in Baily Hall.  Speaker TBA

Cornelliana  8:30 PM Schoellkopf

There are many more lectures, tours, presentations listed in the Cornell Reunion schedule as well. We are also planning a series of video presentations commemorating our time at Cornell and memorable events.

Instead of a class gift our fund-raising efforts for reunion have been directed towards increasing our scholarship and academic innovation funds.  As you can see above our Innovation in Teaching award is making a difference. Our undergraduate scholarship fund has also helped many students as well.  In honor of our reunion, we are asking that our scholarships be redirected to first generation undergraduate students.

Please join the Class Yearbook if you have not done so.  Almost 400 classmates have joined.   Make your plans for Ithaca in June.  There is a lot to celebrate.
